Artificial island 'New Holland'
About museum
New Holland is a complex of buildings located on an artificial island between the Kryukov and Admiralty canals and the Moika River. It was created in 1717 after the completion of the canals. The island's name comes from Peter I, who invited Dutch shipbuilders to work at the Neva shipyards. The name was also associated with the imperial house built on the island at Peter I's command. After Peter I's death, the island was transferred to the Naval Collegium, and wooden warehouses for storing ship timber were erected there, later replaced by stone structures. Within a decade New Holland became a popular place for recreation, and in the 1730s it was described by the traveler Karl Reinhold Berck. However, in the 1750s the warehouses fell into disrepair, and a decision was made to build stone buildings.
