About museum
The idea of opening a museum in Rostov-on-Don was first conceived in 1862 at the initiative of the city mayor A. M. Baykov. The aim was to create a repository of the people's wealth and monuments of the region's past. The museum began permanent operation in 1910 at the initiative of M. B. Krasnyansky, A. M. Ilyin and V. I. Asmolov. The museum exhibited personal belongings of D. L. Mordovtsev, cups of A. V. Suvorov, and the tricorne and sword of A. M. Baykov. In 1920 the museum continued its activities as the Don Regional Soviet Museum of Arts and Antiquities. Paintings, sculptures and antiques were acquired. After the formation of the Azov-Black Sea Krai in 1934, the Regional Museum of Local History was established in the building at Pushkinskaya St., 204. In 1937 the exhibitions "Rostov-on-Don in the Past and Present" and "Don Writers" were opened.
