Okulovsky District Museum of Local History named after N. N. Miklouho-Maclay

Between St. Petersburg and Moscow, in the small town of Okulovka, in the locality of Yazykovo-Rozhdestvenskoye, Nikolai Nikolaevich Miklouho-Maclay was born. For more than thirty years, the only museum in Russia named in his honor has operated in the traveler's homeland. The Okulovsky Museum of Local History opened in January 1983 at the initiative of local historian L.E. Brikker, who initially also became the head of the cultural institution. Initially, the museum's exhibitions were housed in an old building that once belonged to the merchant Soin.

\r\nThe local history museum experienced a rebirth in 1996. It was then, on the 150th anniversary of the birth of the great scientist and humanitarian N.N. Miklouho-Maclay, that a permanent exhibition dedicated to the traveler's memory was created under the Committee for Culture and Cinema of the Okulovsky District. Another important milestone in the museum's history was 2001, when the institution was given the name of N.N. Miklouho-Maclay.

\r\nToday the museum has six permanent exhibitions ("Nikolai Miklouho-Maclay — Our Countryman", "The Cherished Alleys of Noble Estates", "The Roerichs on Novgorod Land", "A Name in the Region's History", "The Silent Memory of War" and "Peasant Life"), each interesting in its own way. In addition, themed events for adults and children are held regularly, various exhibitions are organized (art, folk-applied arts, documentary), and other forms of activity are used. At the same time, the main direction pursued by the staff is to make the museum an attractive and interesting place not only for local residents but also for the city's many visitors.
