About museum
Peter the Great Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Kunstkamera) (MAE RAS) is one of the largest and oldest museums in the world. It is the successor of Peter's Kunstkamera, founded by Peter I in 1714. In 1903 the museum was named after the founder of the Kunstkamera — Peter the Great. Over a 20-year period, from 1894 to 1914, the museum's ethnographic collections grew by almost 100,000 storage items. The museum's collections comprise more than 1.2 million storage items. These priceless collections reflect the full diversity of the cultures of the peoples of the Old and New Worlds and are part of the cultural heritage of all humanity. Today MAE RAS is one of the most important research centers in Russia, where new exhibitions have been created, the budget has been increased, and expeditions have been organized to replenish the collections.
