Spaso-Evfimiev Monastery Museum Complex
About museum
In 1352 Prince Boris Konstantinovich of Suzdal founded the Spaso-Evfimiev Monastery, whose beauty amazed the 18th-century Suzdal historian Ananiy Fedorov. At the center of the monastery stands the 16th-century Transfiguration Cathedral (Spaso-Preobrazhensky Cathedral), which was icon-painted by an artel of Kostroma masters led by Guriy Nikitin and Sila Savin. Near the church is the family tomb of the Pozharsky princes, and at the end of the 19th century a mausoleum was restored at the burial site of Prince Dmitry Mikhailovich Pozharsky. By the cathedral there is a bell tower with 19 bells and the archimandrite’s quarters with a tent-roofed 16th-century Assumption refectory church. In the monks’ cells there is an exhibition dedicated to the history of Suzdal’s monasteries, and in the former 17th-century St. Nicholas hospital church is the "Golden Treasury" exhibition, which presents the development of Russian jewelry art. The ensemble of the Spaso-Evfimiev Monastery is included on UNESCO’s World Heritage List.
