Gorki Estate Museum

About museum

At the end of the 18th century an estate appeared in Gorki, and at the beginning of the 19th century a park and the manor house were built there at the commission of the Durasovs. In the pre-revolutionary years the estate was owned by the millionaire Z. G. Morozova and her husband, Moscow's city governor A. A. Reinbot. In the autumn of 1918 V. I. Lenin visited Gorki after an attempt on his life. From the winter of 1921–1922 he spent most of his time here and lived here permanently until his death. After him the estate was occupied by the family of his brother Dmitry Ilyich until 1949. In that same year, on the 25th anniversary of Lenin's death, a museum-reserve was opened, and the estate grounds were reconstructed in 1961–1962. In 1980–1987 a new museum complex of 6,000 sq. m was built to a design by architects L. N. Pavlov and L. Yu. Gonchar. All objects of the museum-reserve display exhibits of high cultural and historical value, including furniture of the 18th–20th centuries, paintings and decorative-applied arts, and the personal belongings of V. I. Lenin and the Ulyanov family.
