Unique Kalmykia Museum
About museum
The museum was founded on April 20, 2016. At first it was an exhibition 'Unique Kalmykia' and was located in the Chess Palace, in City-Chess (Elista); however, due to major renovations of the building in autumn 2019 the museum was forced to vacate. Only a year later it found new premises in the Uralan Entertainment Center.
The core of the collection consists of artifacts of the museum's founder Basan Alexandrovich Zakharov. After the exhibition opened, local residents began bringing their family heirlooms; the museum team was able to restore some items thanks to the support of the Presidential Grants Fund.
Today the museum is a member of the Union of Private Museums and Collectors. In 2022 the museum team is preparing a number of projects related to the start of mobile activities and the preparation of the book '99 Unique Features of Kalmykia'.
