Uelen Village Museum of Ivory Carving Art
About museum
The Uelen village museum reflects all stages in the history of ivory carving art in Chukotka. Here you can see carving and engraving on the bones of marine animals, decorative and applied arts, and archaeology. Particularly valuable is the collection of applied arts, household items, and ethnography assembled since 1943. During this time the museum acquired works by such well-known masters as Vukvutagin, Kililoya N., Gemauge, Lyag-Lyaga, Khuvata, Renville, Onno, and others. In the Soviet years the museum received unique items from honored artists of the RSFSR, including Emkulya V., Yanku E., Tynvtvalya G., Yemrykanin V., Tukka, Khukhutana, Seigutegin I.I., Irgutegina G.I., Pechetegina T.A., and Teyutina L.I. The museum has two exhibition halls: 'Archaeology and Ethnography' and 'Ivory Carving Art and Decorative and Applied Arts'.
