In 1959 a museum was opened, organized by G. Shchedrin, a vice-admiral and Hero of the Soviet Union. It is the only large military museum in the northeast of Russia. The museum comprises one exhibition and four exhibition halls where visitors can learn about the formation and development of Kamchatka's armed forces, as well as about the founding of the port of Petropavlovsk, the Kamchatka expeditions of the 18th century, the defense of Petropavlovsk–Kamchatsky in 1854, the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-1905, and other events of the Kamchatka region.
