Archaeological Wood Museum «Tatarskaya Slobodka»

About museum

In the lower part of the town of Sviyazhsk, near the pier, inside an artificial mound, there is one of the most unusual museums of the Island-City Sviyazhsk Reserve - the Archaeological Wood Museum «Tatarskaya Slobodka». Creating the museum took a lot of time and the efforts of many organizations and specialists. The opening took place on September 5, 2018. There are few archaeological wood museums in the world; of them, only two are associated with wooden buildings - «Berestye» in Brest (Belarus) and the Archaeological Wood Museum in Sviyazhsk. It became the first and only museum of this kind in Russia. On an area of 5 hectares in the area of the Shchuka and Sviyaga rivers, a cultural layer more than three meters thick formed in the 16th–18th centuries, completely saturated with water. Such deposits are called a "wet cultural layer." Organic items that would not normally survive are preserved in it. Here you can see houses from every historical period, which is a real marvel. In 2010 an archaeological excavation was carried out, and a city was found underground.
