Metropolitan Chambers
About museum
Metropolitan Chambers are one of the oldest buildings in the city, representing an excellent example of Old Russian stone architecture. They were built in 1682 by the Rostov Metropolitan Iona Sysoevich, a well-known builder of the Rostov Kremlin. Since 1977 the Department of Old Russian Art has been located here, where exhibitions and displays are held. In the permanent exhibition 'Old Russian Art of the 13th–17th centuries' you can see unique works of icon painting: early icons, monumental images from the era of Ivan the Terrible and the finest works of the 17th century. The exhibition includes more than 500 works in total. Here you can see the most valuable monuments of Yaroslavl art, works that made Yaroslavl's 'golden age' famous.
