Memory Museum
About museum
The Memory Museum is located in the basement section of the Central Department Store, a few steps from the city’s main square — the Square of the Fallen Fighters. The Central Department Store was built to a design by architect M. P. Tsubikova and was heavily damaged during the Great Patriotic War (World War II). After the end of the war the building was restored according to a design by architect I. K. Beldovsky and was included in the list of objects of federal historical and cultural significance. It was here that, on January 31, 1943, the staff of the Wehrmacht's 6th Field Army was taken prisoner; for this reason, in 2003 a 'Memory' Museum was created in the basement. In February 2012 the basement premises were transferred to the operational management of the Museum-Reserve 'Battle of Stalingrad'. Today the Memory Museum is a favorite place for Volgograd residents and city visitors, and its hallmark is the annual reenactment of the capture of the staff of the Wehrmacht's 6th Field Army. The Memory Museum's staff also give lectures and conduct interactive sessions for schoolchildren and for students of colleges and universities.
