State Museum-Reserve "Rostov Kremlin"
About museum
The State Museum-Reserve "Rostov Kremlin" was founded on October 28 (November 10) 1883 on the grounds of the architectural ensemble of the former Rostov bishop's residence. It was built in the 1670s–1680s by the Metropolitan of Rostov and Yaroslavl Iona III (Sysoevich). The museum's establishment was initiated by Rostov merchants and local historians, Archbishop of Yaroslavl and Rostov Ionafan, Yaroslavl Governor V. D. Levshin, and representatives of the Moscow Archaeological Society. In 1959 the Rostov museum became a branch of the Yaroslavl Architectural and Art Museum-Reserve, and in 1969 it received the status of an independent museum-reserve. In 1995, by decree of the President of Russia, the museum was included in the State Register of Particularly Valuable Objects of the Cultural Heritage of the Peoples of Russia. It is currently the only federal museum in Yaroslavl Oblast. The museum houses more than 220,000 museum items, represented in the collections of icons, paintings, archaeology, textiles, etc.
