A new exhibition project opened at the house-museum of M.E. Saltykov-Shchedrin\r\r\nThe exhibition is dedicated to the novel-chronicle "The History of a Town" and the writer's birthday – on January 27 Mikhail Yevgrafovich turns 199 years old. The house-museum's exposition features illustrations by well-known Russian artists, in which one can see the colorful characters of the novel – Ugryum-Burcheev, Brudastyi, Ferdyshchenko and others, executed in various styles and techniques. Thanks to this, visitors will be able to compare how different artists form the image of the same character.\r\n\r\nThe deputy director of the local history museum, Nadezhda Oskolkova, emphasized that this unique exhibition of artworks became possible thanks to painstaking work on building the museum collection. For decades the museum's staff contacted artists, studied their creative legacy and, bit by bit, assembled works illustrating Saltykov-Shchedrin's books.\r\n\r\nAmong the rarest are works by the creative collective of graphic artists Kukryniksy, created in 1979. It should be noted that the Kukryniksy first created a cycle of illustrations for the novel in 1939, and in the late 1970s the artists reworked their cycle, expanding it and making the illustrations color. It was this version that was acquired by the Kirov local history museum; part of this cycle is presented at the new exhibition.\r\n\r\nVisitors will also be able to see etchings and sculptural portraits by animator and caricaturist artists Valentin and Galina Karavaev, and graphics and drawings by Vladislav Stanishevsky, Evgeny Sidorkin and Maksim Naumov from the collections of the Kirov Regional Local History Museum named after P.V. Alabin.\r\n\r\nThe exhibition "Saltykov's Characters Through the Eyes of Artists" (0+) will run at the house-museum until February 23.\r\n\r\nWe add that in 2026, for the 200th anniversary of the birth of M.E. Saltykov-Shchedrin, the regional local history museum also plans to present the "pearls" from its collection of artworks related to the writer's work.
