MU Museum of Garbage (MU MU)

One day a team of artists and designers from the capital, the art group 'BURO', created an exhibition of works made from leftovers of various materials, packaging and containers. The project was very well received by both the creators and the public. The artists continued to experiment with materials and create new exhibits, so in 2016 a decision was made to open the MU Museum of Garbage (MU MU) in the Kaluga Region. The concept of this unusual museum is based on the popular idea of conscious consumption and waste recycling.

The museum occupies 1,000 m². In the museum courtyard visitors are greeted by interesting art objects made from scrap metal and garbage: a dairy cow ('burenka'), horses, robots, spaceships, sparkling tents clad in CDs, and much more. The museum pavilion features unique installations: animal figures made from car tires, cactuses made from plastic bottles, New Year's trees and even apartment interiors!

The museum's creators wanted visitors not only to think about the ecology of our planet, but also to view everyday objects from a different angle. Perhaps that is why the museum's motto is: 'Discover! Be amazed! Smile!'. The museum houses more than 500 exhibits created by authors from around the world from a wide variety of materials. Next to each exhibit there is a plaque containing reference information about the piece, the story of its creation and the names of the materials from which it was made.

The museum regularly holds interactive events for children and adults. Among them the quests 'Soft Landing' and 'Apartment Mess' are especially popular, as well as various master classes on making photo frames from candy boxes, trivets for hot dishes and weaving mats from leftover knitwear. In addition, the museum team conducts educational activities and publishes DIY ideas and interesting materials on ecology and waste sorting on its website.

The museum is located on the grounds of the 'Grachy' Business Park. From Monday to Thursday the museum is open from 11:00 to 18:00, and from Friday to Sunday from 10:00 to 19:00. Ticket prices range from 300 to 380 rubles. The museum can also be visited as part of an individual or group tour. The cost of a tour is 1,700 rubles, duration — 45 minutes.
