Exhibition "The Fate of the Commander: Vitus Bering's Kamchatka Expeditions"
About exhibition
The scale of the expeditions led by Vitus Bering in the 18th century is striking in their duration and outcomes, the number of participants and kilometers covered, as well as the hardships and trials faced by all who took part in these explorations. The central theme of the exhibition is the Second Kamchatka Expedition, and the main figures are Vitus Bering and the members of his party. On display are copies of maps, fragments from excavations on Bering Island, numismatic items, books, pieces of rigging and tools, as well as Russian weaponry of the period. Copies of Bering's correspondence covering several years form an important part of the exhibition. A significant portion of the display is devoted to ethnographic and natural history exhibits: herbarium specimens, kayak models, clothing, household utensils, fishing gear, hunting equipment, and elements of the armament of the peoples encountered by the expedition members.
