Derbent State Historical-Architectural and Archaeological Museum-Reserve
About museum
In 1988, by the decision of the Council of Ministers of the Dagestan ASSR, the Derbent State Historical-Architectural and Art Museum-Reserve was established. It was inscribed on the UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage list in 2003 due to the indisputable historical and cultural value of the 'Ancient Derbent' monument. In 2014, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev decided to include the citadel and the historic walled town of Derbent in the register of cultural heritage sites of federal significance. The museum-reserve territory and the adjacent historic urban fabric include monuments from various periods and are of value for history, architecture, urban planning, and the natural landscape. The museum-reserve comprises six departments: the architectural-archaeological complex 'Citadel Naryn-Kala', the Carpet and Decorative-Applied Arts Museum, the Museum of Culture and Life of Ancient Derbent, the Memorial House-Museum of A.A. Bestuzhev-Marlinsky, the 'Nature of the Caspian' Museum, and the 'Military Glory' Museum.
