Urzhum Local History Museum named after N. N. Arbuzova
About museum
The Urzhum District Museum was opened on November 24, 1924 at the initiative of local public education authorities and the land department. The museum houses collections of ethnography, archaeology, numismatics, phaleristics, applied arts and painting, including 60 landscape paintings of Urzhum donated by the Vepikov artists. The museum building was constructed in 1907 and in the past served as a fire station, a real (realschule) school, a craft school, a vocational-technical school, a tractor drivers' school, a mechanization school and Rural Vocational Technical School No. 8. The museum exhibition is located in 8 halls covering 1,122 sq. m, of which 800 sq. m is exhibition and display space. It presents objects of material culture of ancient inhabitants, a peasant yard, an izba (peasant log house), a merchant's house and shops, as well as information about nature, climate, natural resources, industry, agriculture, culture, healthcare and education. The museum also features a diorama "Valley of the Urzhumka River near the town of Urzhum".
