Prison Castle
About museum
The Prison Castle of the Tobolsk Kremlin is a mysterious architectural complex; until 1989 it was one of Russia’s most severe prisons and is now the Museum of Siberian Penal Servitude and Exile. The tour allows visitors to learn about the everyday life of prisoners from the pre-revolutionary and Soviet periods, and to visit the gloomy underground chambers that have preserved the oppressive atmosphere of incarceration. In the prison shop you can buy the museum’s signature rusks and souvenirs, sit in the tea room “Po Krugu” and take photos in the photo area. For those who are not afraid of ghost legends, it is possible to spend the night in the “Uznik” hostel, located in the very center of the Prison Castle. In addition, one of the buildings of the former penal prison houses a joint project of the museum-reserve and the Moscow film company Solivs dedicated to the feature film “Tobol,” which was shot in Tobolsk in 2017. The Prison Castle of the Tobolsk Kremlin is a place where everyone can gain unique impressions and feel the atmosphere of history.
