Stary Oskol Local History Museum
About museum
Stary Oskol Local History Museum is one of the oldest cultural institutions in the Belgorod Region, its history inseparably linked with the history of the city. In 1923 the Proletarian Club was opened, where a group of local history circles began to operate, and on April 11 a decision was made to establish the museum. Nikolay Mikhailovich Rozhdestvensky was appointed director. Residents of Stary Oskol actively supported the idea and contributed household items, traditional craft products, books and other finds to the museum's collections. The period of the Great Patriotic War was the most difficult for the museum, as collections were lost, but after the liberation of the city a decision was made to revive the museum. By April 20, 1945 more than 2,400 exhibits had been gathered. Over the postwar decades the museum's collections were expanded and in 1995 it was moved to the Likhushin building — a monument of history and architecture. The museum bases its activities on the preservation and study of historical and cultural monuments.
