The Poshekhonsky Folk Historical and Local Lore Museum is a unique phenomenon of provincial culture. It was opened in 1974 at the initiative of local residents and with the support of the district authorities. It houses almost 4,500 exhibits that tell about the history of the region, urban life, crafts and trades, Poshekhonye during the Great Patriotic War, nature, the plant and animal world, and Poshekhonye in the 20th–21st centuries. The museum offers various interactive programs such as 'My Flax, Little Flax', 'Poshekhony — Eccentrics', and 'Wedding at the Museum'. It is open to everyone and embraces an educational mission aimed at a broad audience. The museum holds themed sessions for schoolchildren and preschool institutions, meetings of veterans from different generations. It also serves as a source of materials on the region's history for school and agricultural college students and residents of the town and district. New projects and programs, as well as playful and educational forms of work, are constantly being developed and implemented.
