Monument-museum Church of Simeon the God-Receiver
About museum
On Dmitriyevskaya Street, behind the rampart of the outer town, stands the monument-museum — the Church of Simeon the God-Receiver, built in the 15th century. It was erected in 1466 in prayer for the end of a plague epidemic and is famous for its unusual frescoes. The images of saints placed on the walls and pillars of the church in friezes represent an illustration of the Menaion according to the Athonite–Jerusalem rite. Each depiction of a saint is associated with a specific day and month of the year. At the end of the 15th century the church suffered from a fire, and during the Swedish occupation it was plundered. In the 18th–19th centuries it was rebuilt and restored to its original appearance while preserving later elements. The Church of Simeon the God-Receiver is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
