The Orenburg Regional Museum of Fine Arts was founded in 1960 and opened in 1961. It is located in a building constructed in the early 19th century to a design by architect Mikhail Malakhov. The museum's main collection includes works by Lukian Vasilievich Popov (1873–1914), who was born and worked for many years in Orenburg. In addition, the museum exhibits works of Old Russian, Russian, Soviet, and Western European art from the 16th century to the present day. Special attention is given to works by Russian 19th-century artists, mainly landscapes. The museum also displays a collection of naive paintings by artists from the Orenburg region, including works by S. G. Stepanov, known worldwide. The museum also collects and exhibits items related to local history and culture. It conducts active collecting, scientific, and outreach activities, organizes exhibitions, academic readings, and lecture series, and serves as an important cultural center for the city and region.
