National Museum of the Republic of North Ossetia–Alania
About museum
The museum in Vladikavkaz was founded in 1893 on the initiative of the Terek Statistical Committee. It was established following a wave of interest in archaeology caused by the discovery of the famous Koban burial ground with unique bronze items. These formed the basis of the museum's collection, as well as the collections of arms and numismatics. It is the oldest museum in the South of Russia. The main building is located in the house of merchant Khodyakov, built at the beginning of the 20th century. The museum's holdings amount to about 300,000 storage units. The collection includes unique artifacts, rare Caucasian and Eastern weapons, as well as an extensive photographic archive. The museum structure comprises the main museum and 11 branches, including the Kosta Khetagurov Museum of Ossetian Literature, the Kosta Khetagurov Memorial House-Museum, the I. A. Pliev Memorial House-Museum, the Vladikavkaz City History Museum and the Ardon Museum of People's Education.
The museum participates in international projects and conducts creative master classes.
