I. Ya. Slovtsov Museum Complex
About museum
The State Autonomous Cultural Institution of the Tyumen Region "I. Y. Slovtsov Museum Complex" traces its history back to 1879. It is one of the oldest museums in Siberia. It all began with the prominent scholar, educator, and local historian Ivan Yakovlevich Slovtsov. He was an avid collector, and his collections became the basis for two museums in Omsk and Tyumen. In 1879 the Tyumen Alexandrov Real School was opened, to which Slovtsov was appointed director. He brought part of his collections with him and exhibited them in two halls of the merchant Voynov's house. That year can be considered the founding date of the Tyumen museum. It became multidisciplinary and, compared to other European museums, was of great significance. Today the museum comprises five branch museums devoted to different aspects of the history of the Tyumen Region. It is a leading cultural center of the region.
