Museum of Modern Volcanism
About museum
There is only one museum of volcanism in Russia, belonging to the Institute of Volcanology and Seismology of the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The museum conducts research to assess the composition and formation conditions of parental basaltic and andesitic calc-alkaline magmas of active volcanoes. The museum was established in 1963 and named after the institute's first director of volcanology and seismology, B. I. Piipa. Since 2005 it has once again been part of the IVS FEB RAS. It houses a systematic collection of most types of rocks and minerals from active volcanoes of Kamchatka, the Kuril Islands, and the Pacific, Atlantic, and Mediterranean regions. The museum's work is closely linked with the scientific and organizational activities of the Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, and the main source of collection materials is the research and projects of the FEB RAS.
