About museum

In the Smolensk region, people have cultivated flax and processed it since time immemorial. In 1980 the first museum-reserve in Russia, "Smolensk Flax", was opened to present an exhibition on the history of flax growing. Here you can see plowing implements, automatic machines, manifestations of folk art, and also learn skills such as belt weaving and making dolls in traditional costume. The museum is currently located in the Nikolskaya Tower of the Smolensk fortress wall. Festivals are organized here, in which visitors can participate. This museum allows people to become acquainted with the rich history of flax cultivation and its processing in the Smolensk region.
