Koporye Fortress Museum
About museum
Koporye Fortress — an attraction preserved in its original form in the Leningrad Region — is an example of ancient Russian stone military defensive architecture. It was built in the 16th century using stones from the 13th century. It is located on a rocky cape 12 km from the Gulf of Finland and is surrounded by the deep ravine of the Koporka River. The fortress's construction is linked to the process of Slavic state formation and the struggle to protect border lands from raids. In the center of the fortress courtyard stands the Transfiguration Cathedral, which was built together with the fortress. The well-known Russian painter O. A. Kiprensky was baptized here in the 18th century.
