In 1978 a museum was opened in Tambov as a branch of the Tambov Regional Museum of Local Lore. It houses more than 2,500 storage units, including documentary collections, printed publications, manuscripts, photographs and rare medical publications. The museum also displays awards of Tambov physicians, personal seals and medical equipment. It features images and graphics of a well-known ophthalmologist and sculptural portraits of Tambov doctors. Visitors can learn about the medical history of the Tambov region from the 17th century and about the development of medical specialties and healthcare institutions in the region. The museum also contains materials on medical professionals born in the Tambov region who gained international recognition. The collections of the founder of Tambov surgery and other physicians, teachers and medical researchers are preserved in the museum.
