Civil War Museum

About museum

A small urban estate from the first half of the 19th century, centered on a house in the late Classicist style, has a rich historical connection to the past. In 1918 Lev Trotsky stayed here, and in August–September of that year Sviyazhsk and its surroundings became the epicenter of the first stage of the Russian Civil War. In connection with this, in 2016 a museum dedicated to that period in the town's history was opened at this site. It features historical newsreels and video segments, a model of the railway station with Trotsky's train, a topographic map of the significant operations, and you can also visit the 'working office' of the People's Commissar for Military and Naval Affairs, where his printed works and items found at the 1918 battle sites in Sviyazhsk and its vicinity are exhibited.
