Museum 'The Stationmaster's House'
About museum
Vyra is a village with a long history; it was the site of a third-class postal station from 1800. In 1972 the first museum in Russia dedicated to a literary character was opened here — devoted to Alexander Sergeyevich Pushkin, who passed through this place 13 times. From 1972 to 1987 a team led by A. A. Semochkin, following a design by V. V. Ekk, restored the buildings of the Vyra postal station that have survived since 1834. There was also the Belarusian postal route here, which connected the capital with the western and southern governorates of the Russian Empire. The museum created an exhibition conveying the atmosphere of 19th-century postal and road life. At the time of opening the museum collection numbered only 72 items, but over almost 50 years staff increased it to 5,000 items. In September 2018 the museum was closed for restoration, but it is possible to visit the site where the wooden postal station stood and to view the decommissioned postal route. In the settlement of Druzhnaya Gorka there is a museum studio where workshops, classes and events are held.
