Kovdor District Local History Museum
About museum
Kovdor Local History Museum began its activities in 1987. Two large halls — an exhibition hall and an exposition hall — are always ready to pleasantly surprise residents and visitors of the town with a variety of exhibitions and the uniqueness of the exhibits. The 12 sections of the exhibition, created on the principle "the very first of everything", preserve the history of the Kovdor district, telling about the town's founding, its development and its inhabitants. The museum's collections contain more than 6,000 items. Photographs and personal belongings recall people whose names are inextricably linked with Kovdor's history: K.M. Koshits — the discoverer of the iron ore deposit; O.M. Rimskaya-Korsakova — granddaughter of the great composer, honorary citizen of the town; A.I. Sukhachev — director of the Kovdor GOK; O. Voronova — a Sámi poet; G.M. Kert — a Karelian linguist and scientist, specialist in Baltic-Finnic and Sámi languages. Among the exhibits from the late 19th century are household items of the indigenous Sámi people.
