The Yelabuga State Museum-Reserve was established in 1989 and six years later was included in the list of historical and cultural heritage sites of federal significance. The museum houses 75,169 items from various collections. The area of the protected zone is 491.5 hectares and contains 184 cultural heritage sites, of which 6 are of federal significance, 106 are of republican significance, and 72 are local. The museum comprises 17 museum and exhibition sites, including the I. I. Shishkin House-Museum, the N. A. Durova estate museum, the V. M. Bekhterev County Medicine Museum, the M. I. Tsvetaeva Memorial House, and the historical and archaeological complex "Yelabuga Hillfort". Each year the museum receives more than 1 million tourists, thanks to tour operator services.
