Vladimir Fedoseevich Raevsky was a Russian poet and publicist, a Decembrist, and a participant in the Patriotic War of 1812. He was born in the village of Khvorostyanka into the family of a landowner. He studied at the Moscow University Noble Boarding School and served in the Regiment of Nobility.
In 1812 Raevsky became an ensign in the 23rd Artillery Brigade. For his participation in the war he received awards for bravery. In 1816 he retired, but in 1818 he returned to service. In 1820 Raevsky joined the secret society "Union of Welfare", and later the Southern Secret Society.
Raevsky was arrested in 1822 on charges of revolutionary agitation. He was initially sentenced to death, but the sentence was later commuted. After the Decembrist uprising the poet was stripped of his noble rank and his orders. In 1827 Raevsky was exiled to Siberia, where he engaged in agriculture and in educating peasants. He refused the 1856 amnesty. Vladimir Fedoseevich Raevsky died in 1872.
