Trubetskoy House Museum

About museum

On December 29, 1970, the Decembrists Museum was opened in Irkutsk, located in the house at 64 Dzerzhinsky Street. According to legend, it belonged to the family of the Decembrist Sergey Petrovich Trubetskoy. Historians believe that the house was built for one of the three Trubetskoy daughters in the 1850s. It is also known that from 1843 to 1848 the Decembrist Iosif Podzhio lived here, and after him the family of Anna and Vikenty Mishtoftov. In 1936 a memorial plaque was installed on the house's facade, and in the 1960s it was restored and turned into the Decembrists' House Museum. In 2007 a new restoration began, and in 2011 the museum was opened to visitors with a new exhibition "A Fate That Reflected an Era", telling the story of the Decembrist Trubetskoy, his family and friends. The interiors of a mid-19th-century noble house have been recreated in the building, displaying memorial items of the Trubetskoy family and other Decembrists.
