Matvey Muravyov-Apostol House Museum
About museum
The Decembrists Museum is not just a place to visit but a historical reliquary that evokes the past and stands as an unusual example of preserving historical heritage. The Decembrists Museum was opened thanks to a unique circumstance: a potential heir saved a ruined city estate on Old Basmannaya Street. Swiss businessman and Russian nobleman Christopher Muravyov-Apostol restored it at his own expense and established a museum there. Today the Moscow Classicism–style building consists of a basement level with recreated 18th-century interiors and a main floor (piano nobile) with an entrance hall, a buffet room, a study, a bedroom, two living rooms, a ballroom, and a hall. Exhibitions, guided tours, and other cultural events are held here. The estate has become a true reliquary, preserving historical heritage and recalling the past.
