Center for the Study of History and Culture of the Demyansky District
About museum
The Center for the Study of History and Culture of the Demyansky District is located in the center of the settlement of Demyansk. The building was constructed in 1868 by the merchant Grigory Maksimovich Smetanin and was already shown on the city's block plans in 1901. The center has six halls, each of which contains information about a specific aspect of Demyansk's history. The 'Military History of Demyansk' hall is devoted to the military divisions, hero pilots, and partisans who defended the town. The 'Popovo Boloto' hall reconstructs the history of the prisoner-of-war camp. The 'Local History' hall contains information on the history of Demyansk, as well as a collection of birch-bark handicrafts. The 'Peasant Life' hall presents a repository of peasant household items. The exhibition hall is constantly updated, and the flora and fauna hall reflects the diversity of the animal and plant life of the Demyansky District. The center invites guests from all corners of the country and abroad. Here you can learn the history of the town and visit exhibitions by local artists and masters of decorative and applied arts.
