Archaeological excavations have been carried out in Taman for several decades, led by prominent Russian scholars: E. I. Zabelin, V. G. Tizengauzen, M. I. Rostovtsev, V. D. Blavatsky, B. A. Rybakov, N. I. Sokolsky, M. M. Kobylyna, I. B. Zeest and others. In the center of the stanitsa there is the settlement (hillfort) "Germonassa-Tmutarakan", which opens access to the history of the Taman settlement over 2,600 years. In 1989 the Taman Archaeological Museum was opened, exhibiting the results of the excavations. The museum's artistic design was executed in the style of antiquity according to a project by V. V. Gavrilov. In the museum lapidary you can also see a collection of Khazar tombstones that attract visitors' attention.
