Akhtynsky Local History Museum

The Akhtynsky Local History Museum was established in 1937 and is located in the building of the Akhtyn Juma Mosque. It is the second oldest museum in Dagestan. The museum's collection contains more than 7,000 exhibits. Visitors can see a paleontological collection, a diorama depicting the nature of the Akhtynsky District of Dagestan, Stone Age artifacts and items from other eras, weapons, a numismatic collection, household items of a mountain home, and decorative and applied arts. The museum also houses a rich ethnographic collection, including costume ensembles of the peoples of Dagestan, items of cults and rituals of the Akhtyn people, jewelry, and handmade carpets. Visitors can also view the interiors of a coppersmith's workshop, a mountaineer's sakli (traditional dwelling), a home bakery, a model of the Akhtyn fortress built in 1839, and a collection of paintings from the Soviet period. The "Hall of Glory" presents information about Akhtyn residents who participated in the Great Patriotic War (World War II), as well as personal archives, awards and documents of veterans, and recordings of their wartime recollections.
