The TsK19 Cultural Center presents a solo exhibition by Vyacheslav Chimitov, “Horizon Line: The Possibility of Paradise.” The exhibition features around 40 paintings and graphic works.
The issues the artist develops in his painting concern cultural and historical memory: the works’ narratives most often actualize the problem of the “genius loci” — the landscape of Buryatia, where the artist was born and raised — as well as the problem of national self-identification. Ecological questions also occupy a significant place in his creative inquiries: the genre of landscape is reinterpreted in the works, whose leading motif — the natural landscape — absorbs an anxious premonition of impending ecological catastrophes.
The project is divided into several conceptual, thematic blocks that form a multipart narrative about the sense of time. All these blocks are united by a common narrative beginning and a common formal foundation, which reveal the transformations of the artist’s creative thinking over several years and reflect various problematic issues (human, social, ideological) addressed in particular works and cycles as a whole. Ultimately, a kaleidoscope of thought-images about oneself, time, the world, people, and feelings should emerge.
“The project will allow me, as an author, to present my creative searches as a coherent artistic statement. It will demonstrate different aspects of my reflections on the contemporary, reveal the structure of my method, and make the contours of my creative position and strategy visible to the viewer in the context of the local (more broadly — regional) artistic community,” says Vyacheslav Chimitov.
