On May 24 the entire Slavic world celebrates a truly great holiday — the Day of Slavic Writing and Culture, observed on the feast day of the holy equal-to-the-apostles brothers Cyril and Methodius.
The A.N. Radishchev Museum held a themed program "From the Clay Tablet to the Printed Page", in which Penza schoolchildren took part.
The children learned about the holiday, its history and its significance for Russian culture, about the development of Slavic writing from ancient times to the present day, and about the pivotal role of the enlighteners Cyril and Methodius in creating the Slavic alphabet.
Students were told about the creation of the first books. The children took part in a quiz, recalled proverbs, and solved a crossword. The students also examined an 18th-century alphabet and old church books in Church Slavonic from the museum's collections.
At the end of the program the children concluded that books are as necessary to people as air and the sun, since they help us to learn about ourselves and to understand the world.
