Exhibition "The Painted Fair"
About exhibition
The exhibition introduces the traditions of folk fairs. The atmosphere of an authentic fair is recreated here with rows of stalls, and original objects from the 19th–early 20th centuries are displayed. Visitors can learn about the Bazaar Square of the late 19th century, which stood on the site of the Cheboksary Bay and housed merchants' shops. You will see harness items for horse-drawn teams — shaft bows, bells and collars. Lighting fixtures from past eras, irons and other household utensils reveal the everyday life of peasant, townsman and merchant households. Chests filled with fabrics, sarafans and kokoshniks illustrate how a merchant's wife or a peasant woman of the 19th century might have dressed and adorned herself. A special tea area is highlighted where fair guests can see the samovars of the Batashov brothers and Teile, as well as tea service sets. The exhibition includes interactive workshops and photo sessions in traditional folk costumes.
