The work of Afanasy Osipov, devoted to the artist's homeland—Yakutia—has for many decades defined the development of Yakut painting. Deeply sensing the poetry of the harsh nature of the Far North and its vital force, the artist captured landscapes covering a wide geographic range. Paintings focused on everyday life, portraits of laborers and members of the creative intelligentsia are distinguished by their profound exploration of life’s problems, their insight into the spiritual world of contemporaries, and a new rethinking of pictorial means on a realist basis. Creative trips to various countries—Italy, Montenegro, Switzerland and France—have been of central importance to Afanasy Osipov. By absorbing the beauty of the whole world and the richness of national forms and colors from the cultures of different peoples, the artist's work has been continually enriched throughout its development. To the painter, the harmony of the universe and the deep primordial foundations of folk life are revealed in new ways.
