About museum
The history of the museum began in 1937 with the creation of the art department of the Central Museum of Taurida. In 1966 it received its current name and moved into the building of the former officers' assembly. The prewar collection included works of art taken from palaces and estates on the territory of Crimea. It was lost during the Great Patriotic War. After the war the collection was restored and strengthened with exhibits from museums across the USSR. Today the Simferopol Art Museum is one of the largest and most significant museums in Crimea and holds more than 9,000 items.
