Shimanovsk Local History Museum
About museum
Shimanovsk Local History Museum is one of the largest in the Amur Oblast.
In 1969 a local history museum was opened in Shimanovsk. This happened after the town's youth proposed opening a people's museum in House No. 10 on Pervomayskaya Street. In this house in 1917–1918 V. I. Shimanovsky lived — the first head of the railway workshops at Gondatti station. On May 14, 1969 a decision was made to open the museum, and on May 18 it opened its doors to its first visitors. In the early 1990s an extension was added to the museum building. Now the museum has 6 exhibition halls, one exhibition room and a hall for events. The museum's total collection comprises 29,695 items, of which 16,412 are main holdings. The museum's permanent exhibition includes sections dedicated to the nature of the Amur Oblast, the history of Shimanovsk District, settlers' everyday life, the city's history in 1917–1940 and the years of the Great Patriotic War.
