Sarov Historical and Local History Museum
About museum
In 1956 a decision was made to establish a local history museum in Sarov. The initial exhibition, "The Animal World of Our Region," was housed in the building of the local forestry enterprise. A new exhibition, "The History of the Development of Life on Earth," was later created, which attracted the attention of children. In search of exhibits reflecting the town's history, trips were made to Arzamas and Gorky. As a result, a handwritten map of the Sarov forest estate from 1867 was acquired. In 1967 the museum was provided with the premises of the former "Moscow" cinema, where the first exhibition of artists from Gorky was held. The museum's purpose is to preserve and make use of the city's historical and cultural heritage, to develop the cultural and artistic traditions of the local population, and to promote various folk crafts and trades.
Today the museum is one of the region's important attractions. It serves as a place for learning and research for schoolchildren and students, as well as for anyone interested in the history of Sarov and its surroundings.
