V. R. Williams Soil and Agronomy Museum
About museum
In Russia the V. R. Williams Soil and Agronomy Museum was founded; it is one of the largest soil museums in the world. Its exhibition comprises a rich collection of soils from the Arctic Ocean to the Equator. The museum hosts various events, including tours, lectures and workshops for people of all ages. The idea to create such a museum belongs to Vasily Robertovich Williams, who in 1894 was appointed head of the Department of Agriculture and Soil Science at the Moscow Agricultural Institute. The collection received official status in 1934, and in 1938 construction of a separate building was completed, which became one of the first buildings in the USSR built specifically for a museum. However, during World War II the museum was suspended, and after the war it underwent a major reconstruction. Nevertheless, the museum continued to operate, and in 1954 a scientific expedition was organized to study virgin and fallow lands.
