Sheremetev Palace — Museum of Music
About museum
The Sheremetev Palace and the estate of the Sheremetev counts, a unique historical and cultural monument, are a rare example in Petersburg of estate-type development. Built in 1750 to a design by the architect S. Chevakinsky, possibly using drawings by F. B. Rastrelli. The palace was granted by Peter I to Count B. P. Sheremetev in 1712. It belonged to five generations of the senior branch of the famous Russian Sheremetev family until 1917. Many well-known architects participated in the creation of the palace interiors and estate buildings. Until 1931 the Sheremetev Palace was converted into a museum and housed the state collection of musical instruments. It contains a variety of decorative and applied art objects, a painted picture gallery, sculptures, weapons, numismatics, a library, church utensils and icons.
In its historical essence the Sheremetev palace and estate are one of the rare examples of noble life in Russia in the 18th–19th centuries.
