Pinezhsky Local History Museum
About museum
In 1962 the Pinezhsky Local History Museum was established on the basis of a school museum organized by students under the leadership of Vasily Ivanovich Stirmanov, a participant in the Civil War and the Great Patriotic War. Since 1966 the museum has been a branch of the Arkhangelsk Local History Museum. The museum's collection comprises more than 14,000 exhibits, including the tombstone of Prince V. V. Golitsyn, whom Peter I sent into exile in Pinega. The museum presents exhibitions showcasing the natural and historical-cultural heritage of the Pinega region: 'Everyday life and occupations of Pinega peasants before 1917', 'Birds and animals of the forests', 'The town of Pinega — 1780–1917', 'Churches of Pinega', 'Political repressions'. Museum staff conduct tours, museum-educational activities and lectures on topics related to the history of Pinega, the settlement of the Pinega area, and the ancient Chud population of the region.
