Museum of the Mologa Region
About museum
The Museum of the Mologa Region named after N. M. Alekseev opened in 1995 and is a branch of the Rybinsk Museum-Reserve. It is dedicated to the history and culture of Mologa and the Mologa district, which were flooded in the early 1940s for the construction of the Rybinsk hydroelectric power station. Now on the bottom of the Rybinsk Reservoir lie the foundations of the old town of Mologa, about 30 village churches, 3 monasteries and other structures. More than 130,000 inhabitants of these lands became forced resettlers. The museum is housed in the chapel building of the former Afanasyev women’s monastery and is one of the small pockets of preserved Mologa heritage. The museum offers guided overview tours as well as interactive activities with contests, prizes and treats. It features film chronicles from the 1930s about the construction of the Rybinsk HPP, as well as video recordings of stories by former Mologa residents who were resettled. The museum invites visitors to learn about Mologa’s history and to feel the special charm of this unique corner of the Russian countryside.
